Sheffield Bus Interchange

As cities across the UK ramp up their efforts to embrace sustainable transportation, Sheffield has taken a bold step toward a greener future with its brand-new EV charging hub at the Sheffield Bus Interchange. The project, spearheaded by SDE Energy Solutions and completed in collaboration with Evolt (a Swarco company), marks a significant milestone in the city's journey to zero-emission public transport.

A 9-Week Transformation: March 24 – May 24, 2024

In March 2024, SDE Energy Solutions was awarded the principal contractor role for the installation of an advanced EV charging hub at the Sheffield Bus Interchange. This critical infrastructure supports the electrification of the city’s public transport system, starting with four 200EV single-deck buses that hit the roads in April 2024. As part of South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s (SYMCA) long-term vision, this charging hub is the first step towards achieving a zero-carbon public transport network by 2040.

A Cutting-Edge Charging Hub

At the heart of the project lies the installation of four 100kW CCS chargers, each equipped with dual charging points. This setup allows eight buses to charge simultaneously, ensuring the infrastructure can scale with growing demand as more bus operators adopt electric fleets.

SDE Energy Solutions not only delivered the charging infrastructure but also managed the entire design and build process. The project involved extensive civil works, including a 100-meter trench with ducting and cable installation. The team also installed two custom-built 400-amp Proteus O-PEN 3-phase boards housed in two GRP cabinets to ensure seamless power distribution.

A Timely Success and Future Growth

Completed within just 8 weeks, the project was delivered on schedule, earning high praise from stakeholders. The success of the Sheffield Bus Interchange project has already opened new doors, with SDE Energy Solutions being awarded another prestigious contract for the Rotherham Bus Station, which kicked off in July 2024.

As Sheffield continues to push forward in its mission for greener, more sustainable transport, projects like this set the standard for cities aiming to build a zero-carbon future. SDE Energy Solutions is proud to be at the forefront of this change, helping pave the way for cleaner, more efficient public transportation.

Conclusion: A Brighter, Greener Tomorrow

The electrification of Sheffield’s Bus Interchange is more than just an infrastructure project—it’s a glimpse into a future where public transport no longer contributes to air pollution and carbon emissions. With initiatives like these, South Yorkshire is leading the charge in transforming the way we travel, creating healthier cities and a more sustainable planet.
