Project Summary

In March 2024, SDE Energy Solutions Ltd was appointed Principal Contractor by Evolt to deliver the full design and build of a new electric bus charging hub at Sheffield Bus Interchange. The infrastructure was commissioned in support of SYMCA’s rollout of four electric 200EV single-deck buses, which officially entered service in April 2024.

This project marks a major milestone in South Yorkshire’s journey toward achieving a net-zero public transport network by 2040, and sets the foundation for future electrification of regional bus depots.

Scope of Works

SDE Energy Solutions managed the end-to-end delivery, including:

Civil Engineering Works

- Excavation of a 100m trench

- Installation of ducting and cable containment infrastructure

- Site reinstatement and finish works

Electrical Infrastructure Installation

- Four 100kW CCS chargers with dual charging capability

- Two custom-built 400A 3-phase Proteus O-PEN boards

- Integration across two GRP enclosures for electrical protection and accessibility

- Full testing, commissioning, and DNO coordination

Design & Project Management

- Full site design, layout, and cable route planning

- Risk assessments and coordination under CDM regulations

- Stakeholder liaison including SYMCA and bus fleet operators

System Capability

- Charger Type: 4 x 100kW CCS

- Simultaneous Charging Capacity: 8 electric buses

- Operator Readiness: Infrastructure designed to support multiple operators in the future

- Operational Readiness: Delivered ahead of service launch for full integration

The success of the Sheffield project and the quality of SDE’s delivery directly led to the award of the Rotherham Bus Station Electrification, which began in July 2024.
