Multiple EV Charging Sites

  • Client Local authority
  • Date MARCH 2025
  • Sector ELECTRICAL DESIGN
  • Location Berkshire

SDE Design Engineering Ltd has supported the rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across a number of local authority and public car park sites throughout the UK.  Each project involved the installation of chargers ranging from 22 kW to 80 kW, designed to improve accessibility to reliable EV charging for both residents and visitors.

Sites varied significantly in terms of available power, spatial constraints, and existing infrastructure, requiring a tailored design approach to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient installations.

Our Role

SDE Design Engineering Ltd was appointed to provide electrical and car park design consultancy services, developing coordinated layouts and technical design documentation from feasibility through to construction issue.
While DNO coordination was undertaken by others, our designs accounted for known LV point-of-connection (POC) limitations and integrated all supporting infrastructure within the available site constraints.

Scope of Design Services

  • Feasibility and site assessment: Reviewed existing utilities, site history, and as-built information to determine construction feasibility.
  • Environmental and planning considerations: Identified and assessed environmental limitations such as flood risk, conservation areas, and access restrictions.
  • Electrical design: Developed charging layouts, cable calculations, protection schedules, and Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) for systems between 22 kW and 80 kW.
  • Car park design: Integrated charging infrastructure into existing car park arrangements, considering vehicle access, traffic flow, lighting, and user safety.
  • Spatial optimisation: Created compact and practical designs to overcome physical and electrical constraints, often requiring innovative routing or equipment placement.
  • Technical documentation: Produced design reports and drawings suitable for tender and construction, including load assessments and installation guidance.

Key Outcomes

  • Delivered coordinated Stage 3–5 electrical and layout designs across multiple constrained sites.
  • Enabled local authorities to expand public EV charging provision efficiently and safely.
  • Overcame site limitations through creative and adaptable design solutions.
  • Supported local decarbonisation and sustainability strategies through practical, scalable infrastructure delivery.

Sustainability & Legacy

These projects contribute directly to the decarbonisation of local transport networks, supporting the transition to low-emission mobility.
Through thoughtful design and coordination, SDE Design Engineering Ltd has helped local authorities create future-ready public EV charging facilities that balance technical feasibility, cost efficiency, and community benefit.
