This project involved the complete racking fit-out of the largest distribution centre operated by one of Europe's leading supermarket chains—currently their biggest facility worldwide. The objective was to accommodate 27,500 one-and-a-half-tonne pallets within high-capacity static racking systems reaching over 13 metres in height. As the retailer continues to expand its network of stores, the demand for high-volume, efficient storage was critical. The installation was successfully delivered on time and within budget.

The racking solution comprised multiple temperature- and product-specific chambers, including ambient storage, a dedicated chocolate box area, chiller and freezer zones, as well as a substantial non-food storage section. A specialised flammable goods cage was also constructed to meet stringent safety and compliance standards.

To ensure durability and safety in a high-traffic environment, all racking was fitted with heavy-duty column guards and end protectors, core-drilled into the concrete slab. Rack-mounted impact guards provided additional protection against routine wear from order pickers and reach trucks. Other key safety features included:

  • Single and double entry backstops to prevent pallet push-through

  • Mesh decking on upper racking levels for secure storage

  • Drive-through bays designed to enhance operational efficiency and worker safety

The flammable goods area was fully enclosed in 25 x 25mm mesh from floor to ceiling. This enclosure features a fire-integrated safety system with interlocked roller shutter doors that automatically close in the event of a fire alarm. Additional pedestrian fire exit doors were installed to facilitate safe and swift evacuation. Fire baffles were also strategically positioned at each rack level to help contain and limit the spread of any potential fire.

This project stands as a key milestone in high-density, safety-focused warehouse design—supporting both operational growth and compliance within one of the most advanced distribution hubs in the sector.
