SDE Design Engineering Ltd was appointed to deliver end-to-end design and coordination services for a complex EV charging hub on behalf of a leading UK charging operator. The project formed part of a wider national rollout to expand high-power charging capacity and required the successful integration of civil, structural, electrical, and geotechnical disciplines.

Operating within tight programme constraints and complex site conditions, the scheme demanded rigorous technical management, coordination, and proactive client communication from concept through to handover.

Our Role

SDE Design Engineering Ltd acted as the lead design and coordination consultant, managing the project from RIBA Stage 2 (concept design) through to RIBA Stage 6 (handover and completion). Our team was responsible for developing the concept into a fully coordinated technical design, producing the detailed construction package, and supporting the contractor through the build phase — ensuring quality, safety, and compliance throughout.

Scope of Services

  • RIBA Stage 2–3:
  • Development of concept and spatial designs based on client operational requirements.
  • Site feasibility reviews and early risk identification (utilities, access, and environmental constraints).
  • Coordination of multi-disciplinary inputs to form an integrated Stage 3 design package for client approval.
  • RIBA Stage 4:
  • Production of the full technical design, including detailed drawings, specifications, and coordination between civil, structural, and electrical designs.
  • Management of design reviews and technical submissions to achieve client sign-off.
  • RIBA Stage 5:
  • Preparation of the construction issue pack, including all design drawings, schedules, and installation details.
  • Ongoing support to the main contractor through design queries, construction sequencing, and design change control.
  • Assistance with workflow planning to maintain progress and efficiency during live construction.
  • RIBA Stage 6:
  • Compilation of Health & Safety Files, as-built information, and technical documentation for project handover.
  • Final review of design compliance and operational readiness.

Key Outcomes

  • Delivered a fully coordinated design from RIBA Stage 2 to 6, ensuring seamless progression from concept to completion.
  • Provided a comprehensive construction pack enabling efficient and compliant delivery on a complex site.
  • Supported the main contractor with programming and workflow sequencing to maintain construction momentum.
  • Ensured consistent communication with the client and design partners, keeping the project aligned with technical and operational objectives.

Design Challenges & Solutions

  • Multi-disciplinary integration: Managed inputs from civil, structural, and electrical teams to maintain a unified design intent and avoid interface conflicts.
  • Programme pressure: Applied structured workflow planning and regular coordination meetings to keep design and construction on track.
  • Complex site logistics: Adapted design and phasing strategies to overcome spatial and access limitations.
  • Client standards & approvals: Maintained close liaison with the client to ensure all deliverables met brand, safety, and technical expectations.

Sustainability & Legacy

This project forms part of the UK’s growing electric vehicle charging network, supporting the transition to sustainable transport.
By managing the full design lifecycle from concept to completion, SDE Design Engineering Ltd ensured the project was technically robust, well-coordinated, and delivered efficiently — setting a benchmark for future EV infrastructure schemes.
