Hi I am Grace a year 10 student and I’m here at SDE for my week of work experience. SDE group is a family-run business with three sister companies, one being SDE Energy Solutions, which is also family run led by Adrian searl.
Back at school, I am studying History, Art and Drama, these are subject areas where I have the most interest. Art allows me to be creative, drama gives me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and work as a team with my peers. As for history, I enjoy learning about historical events that have impacted our day to day life.
As I'm fast approaching the end of secondary school, I have started to think about my future career, and whilst I don't have an idea set in stone, I am hoping my week at work experience can shed some light on potential future roles.
I started my week off bright and early, looking forward to what the week has in store. First up, I met with India, the Marketing Executive, who welcomed me and another work experience student, Izzy Bennett. We then went through our plan for the week and our first task was to learn a new software called Canva, which we then went through templates and how to use it.
After we had learnt how to use Canva we were set a task to create a social media post and write a caption for Group channels, sharing that we have joined SDE for a week of work experience and what we are looking forward to learn. On Tuesday, we sat with Charlotte, 3D interior Designer/ Creative Lead, who gave us a task of creating a material board which we started out by finding images we liked on Pinterest, such as office inspiration, textures, paint samples and furniture ideas. This allowed me to create a mood board on Canva, which Charlotte kindly provided feedback for, I then went back and made those amends, we then got some materials out and started laying them out to see how they would look next to each other and so that could give me an idea of how the project would look eventually. Later in the week Izzy, India, and I started working on an internal newsletter to inform the team about everything happening in the office, I then partnered with Izzy to interview colleagues about the content that they'd like to include in the newsletter.
Overall, it’s been a highly productive and uplifting week giving me an insight of future careers for me to chose, it has also implemented skills in me that I can use in future careers and school such as communication which has helped me grow both personally and professionally by allowing me to connect with others more effectively and express my ideas clearly and team work which has helped me compromise, manage conflict, and support others when working together.
