At SDE Group, we take pride in offering top-quality services that range from industrial storage solutions, interior design, fit-out, 3D design and visualisations, to racking inspections and much more. Whether it’s creating an efficient storage facility or transforming an outdated space into a modern work environment, we approach every project with precision and dedication to meet our clients’ unique needs. So when CEF (City Electrical Factors), a long-standing client, approached us to take on an end-to-end project in Holland, we were thrilled to rise to the occasion.

CEF and SDE Group: A Long-Standing Partnership

CEF (operating as CES overseas), a leading electrical wholesaler in the UK and America, has been a valued client of SDE Group for years. We’ve completed numerous projects for CEF, making us a trusted partner when it comes to delivering complex industrial and interior solutions. When CEF planned to expand into Holland and required our expertise for a new project, they knew we could handle it from start to finish. And so began our exciting journey of transforming an old building in Holland into a functional, modern storage and office space.

Kicking Off the Holland Project: Choosing the Right Space

Project Consultant Elliot Watson was tasked with overseeing the project. His first job was to visit Holland to support CEF in selecting the perfect building. This part of the process involved a lot of research, communication, and even a few conversations facilitated by Google Translate. But language barriers were no match for Elliot's determination. After numerous discussions, a building was agreed upon—a 1970s structure that was ready for a transformation.

Once the building was chosen, it was cleared out to create a blank canvas for the real work to begin. The primary function of this space would be storage, and SDE Group knew exactly what was needed to make it work.

Industrial Storage Solutions: Cantilever Racking to the Rescue

Given that the building’s main purpose was to serve as a storage facility, Elliot's initial designs focused on creating an efficient storage solution. After assessing the space, Elliot concluded that cantilever racking would be the most effective option. Cantilever racking is ideal for storing long materials such as heavy containment runs and cable trunking. It allows for flexibility in storing both single and double racks, with varying weight capabilities. This system would ensure that CES’s materials were stored efficiently, safely, and with easy access.

Modernising Office Space: A Lick of Paint and a Vision for the Future

The second phase of the project involved modernising an area of the building to be used as office space. Built in the 1970s, this part of the building needed a serious facelift to create a modern and enjoyable working environment. With a strategic blend of new lighting, furniture, and a fresh coat of paint, the space was completely transformed. The goal was not just to modernise, but to create an inviting and comfortable workspace that would inspire productivity, as well as an inviting meeting space for clients and suppliers.

Overcoming Challenges: Electrical Work and Local Standards

No project is without its challenges, and this one was no exception. Not only was European Customs a challenge due to Brexit, but a major hurdle Elliot also faced was that SDE Group Electrical, which typically handles electrical work for our projects, could not fully take on this part of the job due to the differing electrical standards and criteria in Holland. This required Elliot to think on his feet and come up with an alternative solution.

He reached out to Europe Racking, a trusted partner with local contacts in the area, to assist with the electrical work. Thanks to these connections, and with the aid on-site supervision from SDE Electrical, the project continued smoothly without any disruption to the timeline.

Project Completion: From Start to Finish, SDE Group Delivers

The project, which started in June 2024, was completed by August 2024—a true testament to SDE Group’s ability to deliver on time and with exceptional quality. From selecting the building, designing storage solution and modernising office space, to finding solutions for local compliance challenges, SDE Group managed every aspect of the project. The key takeaway from this project is that CEF trusted us to handle everything from start to finish, and we did not disappoint.
